New Orleans Funk Quartet
Muf... ful...... huh?
What the *&$^% does that word mean?
Muffuletta. Pronounced moo-ful-LET-la. Or moo-ful-LOT-ta. Or muff-ful-LET-ta,
depending on what neighborhood you're from.
It's a sandwich that's strictly indigenous to New Orleans, popular
with locals and visitors alike. In some neighborhoods, it's also
a reference to a certain smokable herb. In other words, it's tasty,
fat, sloppy, and it just might take a little spin across the dance
floor with your mind and invite your body to follow. All of which
makes it not a half-bad name for a band whose music is based in
the sumptuous soul of the Crescent City.
Muffuletta is the brainchild of keyboardist and New Orleans expatriate
Joshua Paxton, an evangelical exponent of the pianistic preachings
of Professor Longhair and James Booker. His stint as a fixture of
the New Orleans music scene included protracted tenures with the
Wild Magnolias and the Cosmic Krewe, regular appearances at the
legendary Piano Night at Tipitina's, and frequent collaborations
with numerous other Big Easy notables including Dr. John, Henry
Butler, and assorted Nevilles, Meters, and Marsalises.
